Student Visa
Student Visa
For those entering Japan to study at universities, junior colleges, technical colleges, professional training schools, or Japanese language schools, the designated residential status is "Student." The duration of stay is determined by the Minister of Justice for each applicant and can be up to a maximum of 4 years and 3 months.
The maximum duration for studying at a language school in Japan is 2 years. However, this is contingent on being enrolled in a Japanese educational institution. If you choose to leave school, your visa will no longer remain valid.

What is a Certificate of Eligibility?
A Certificate of Eligibility (COE) is issued by a regional immigration authority under the Immigration Services Agency of Japan. It confirms that a foreign national meets the conditions for entering Japan, meaning the stated activity in the application is accurate and aligns with one of the activities (excluding Temporary Visitor) specified in the Immigration Control Act. For more details, visit the Immigration Services Agency of Japan's website (https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/). A COE can be applied for by a proxy in Japan.
Presenting a COE helps ensure a smoother process for visa applications at an Embassy or Consulate-General and during the landing examination at passport control. However, it's important to note that a COE does not guarantee that a visa will be issued.
While it is possible to apply for this type of visa without a COE, doing so requires submitting a large number of verification documents, and the process could take several months to complete.
