Legal Requirements:
 

  1. The applicant must demonstrate good conduct.

  2. The applicant must have sufficient assets or the ability to sustain an independent living.

  3. The applicant's permanent residence should align with Japan's interests.

  4. The applicant must have resided in Japan for over 10 years, with a work permit or status of residence for at least 5 years during that period.

  5. The applicant must have no criminal record, including fines or imprisonment, and must fulfill public obligations like tax payments.

  6. The applicant must have the maximum allowed period of stay under their current status of residence.

  7. There should be no risk of the applicant posing a threat to public health.

Special Requirements for 10-Year Residence (in principle):
 

  1. The applicant is a spouse of a Japanese national, special permanent resident, or permanent resident, has been in a genuine marital relationship for more than 3 consecutive years, and has lived in Japan for over 1 consecutive year. Alternatively, the applicant is a biological child of a Japanese national, special permanent resident, or permanent resident, and has resided in Japan for more than 1 consecutive year.

  2. The applicant has continuously lived in Japan for over 5 years with long-term resident status.

  3. The applicant has been recognized as a refugee and has lived in Japan for more than 5 years following recognition.

  4. The applicant has contributed to Japan in diplomatic, social, economic, cultural, or other fields and has resided in Japan for more than 5 years.

  5. The applicant is a Highly Skilled Professional and meets specific conditions under the point system. For more details, refer to "Highly Skilled Professionals."
